How to Restore Your Original Amazon Route 53 Name Servers

This won’t be an interesting topic for most people, but it will sure come in handy for a few of you! So you have a website setup on Route 53 and at some point in the past you pointed the name servers off to whatever your hosting solution was at the time. Now you want to do something else with that domain (maybe build a static site on S3) and you need your original Route 53 name servers back. But… what are they?

Finding where Amazon has stored your name server information is super simple, but also incredibly non-obvious (as you probably know by now).

Note, not all the domains on Route 53 have the same name servers! This means you can’t simply put in the NS information from another site. And definitely don’t use the examples in Amazon’s docs, they won’t work!

To get your domain’s name server information you will want to:

• Sign into AWS and go to Route 53
• Go to the Hosted Zones page
• Select the bubble next to the site you want. Do not click the text! A sidebar will be triggered
• This sidebar will have your original, default name servers listed

Put those name servers in the name server information in the “Registered Domains” portion of Route 53 and you will be all set!

Pro tip: Don’t edit the NS record manually! This should be done through the Domain Listing page of Route 53.
